"I want us to win for once, you know? Indians are always losing," Cobell said. "This is the people's own money. This is not the government's money, this is their own money that we're fighting for."
Blackfeet woman sees end to 14-year govt fight
Just one example, of thousands, of how America continues to apply its "ideals" selectively. Whether across the world or here at home. A simple solution (or at least start to) to the plight and misjustice of Native America is the consistent and even application of the Constitution, Bill of Rights, and the rule of law. It was the lack of adherence to these principles that allowed, and continues to allow, such injustice against indigenous peoples at home and abroad.
What was (and is) allowed to happen was government theft of native resources for so many years. Money that should have been put into the IIM (Individual Indian Money accounts) never was and was allocated elsewhere. This should also be an example of why we must not allow the seizure of individual retirement accounts (as Democrats have been moving to) as the money will be mis-allocated, used for others means, and the hard working American people that produce the resources required to move the machine of government will be the ones to pay the price.
So, THANK YOU to Elouise Cobell for continuing her fight on behalf of the Blackfeet. The fight is not over as Congress keeps putting off the allocation of the funds. If the funds are not allocated by May 28th, this whole victory may have been for nothing.

I cannot find information on what legislation is required to move this settlement forward (Senate, House, subcommittee?) but I will post more information once it's found. The May28th deadline is fast approaching...
